Jun. 8th, 2002 06:39 pmI have become part of an entirely unsavory ecosystem involving ducks, goths, and pond scum. I'm sure I'm going to become horribly sick tomorrow. My only solace is that so are several of my friends.
Today was the annual sfgoth water fight out on Stow Lake. Everyone rents paddle boats, and blasts each other with super soakers. I usually go and just watch. So, I went up with Dan this morning, and got into Golden Gate Park at a little after one when everyone was hopping into boats. Saw Rachelhead and said hello. She said "You are going to stay up on the shore, and keep dry with me, right?" and I said "Yes, I am!". Then I trotted over to say hello to Patty who said "You're a pirate, right?!", and I said "Yes, I'm a pirate!". It seems clear that I'm easily influenced.
So, hopped into a boat with Dan and Buz paddling, and Buz's son Max and I being tail gunners. All part of the fearsome pirate armada, along with two other boats. Arrr! I like having an excuse to say avast, and port, and land-lubber. I blame my Herreshoff heritage. Pitted against us was the terror of Team Pikachu, Xavier's Imperial Armada, and our arch-rivals Princess Cruises. And of course a lake full of completely baffled onlookers. Half of the fun of sfgoth events is watching the expressions on passers-by. Oh, and the Cacophony Group showed up, in bunny suits as usual. As if the event wasn't surreal enough.
Much soaking was had by all. After an hour out on the lake everyone was dripping duck soup. Highlights of the battle include Princess Cruises exciting boarding action onto one of the other pirate ships, followed by her inevitable capture at the hands of my fellow brigands. I got to wear the tiara as booty, right up until Tracy wrestled it back from me. Great fun. Though I'm a little bit sad because the ring Val made escaped somewhere into the briny ducky deeps. On the bright side, some day hundreds of years down the line, it's probably going to make some twisted hobbit very happy.
Pictures of the event are already showing up. There's links to some here, including one of me frowning at my hair.
Got out of the water and squelched about on shore. Stripped off my shoes and socks, which I really should have done beforehand, but I wasn't planning on soaking myself, so I didn't think of it. I don't even want to know the biological processes occuring in my socks. I ended up throwing them away before they could gain sentience and begin a killing spree.
Went to Japantown Denny's with the rest of the crew, though after many exciting adventures with 50$ plates of hash browns, we made damn sure we got a separate bill. I don't know what's preventing some people from understanding the vagaries of paying for your drinks, tax, and tip, but I've been screwed too many times on outings with the gothlings. I had a blueberry sundae. Mmmm.
After lunch, Dan, Ceren, Bill, Ben, Patty, and I all wandered around the Japantown center. I found tiny Tare Panda figures I must purchase or I will *explode* (That happens to me sometimes). Hell, I'm going to need something to decorate my work space, right? I don't like thinking about how much money I could have dropped at Japanvideo also. *shudder* There was one area of the mall that smelled like amber. It was really distracting, as smells tie in with memories more than anything, and that smell time-warps me back to weird places. Oh well.
Caught a ride back down the peninsula from Patty, and now I'm trying to figure out what to do with the rest of the evening. Dan's in the east bay, and it seems like everyone else has plans. Maybe I'll watch some of my movies. Hrm.
Oh, in other news, I'm done with training at work. Happy happy. Now if I end up working on a game I hate, at least it'll be a game I hate that has a purpose. We filled out preference sheets on Friday. If I get my top choice, I'll be jumping for joy. I'll be quite happy with any of my top five, and satisfied with most of the rest of the list. There were only a couple of titles that had me shuddering in terror at the possibility of having to look at for months on end. So, odds look good. Hrm. Monday is coming up soon. The weekends seemed so much longer when I didn't have anything to do on Monday. Ah well.
